Richmond, VA. (Sept. 1) -- Defending NCAA National Champion Old Dominion opened the regular season with a 4-0 CAA victory over the University of Richmond Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Monarch defense did not allow the Spiders a shot on goal.

Four different Lady Monarchs scored goals. In the first half, Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, Pa.), Kim Miller (Va. Beach, Va.) and Marina DiGiacomo (Mendoza, Argentina) gave Old Dominion a 3-0 halftime lead. Freshman Marjolijn van der Sommen (Leiden, Netherlands) added the fourth and final goal late in the second half.

Old Dominion outshot Richmond, 19-0 as freshman goaltender Mary Beth Freeman (Holland, Pa.) registered the shutout. The Lady Monarchs host Maryland on Saturday at 1 p.m.
