Luke Smith joined the Monarch coaching staff in 2009-10 after a year of coaching at Central Michigan University. Smith will assist with on-campus recruiting, putting together practice plans and workouts and aiding in academic affairs. His primary duties will be assisting with the lighter weights.
He helped James Nicholson win his fourth-consecutive CAA Championship, as the ODU senior became the first wrestler in CAA history to win four-straight conference titles.
While at Central Michigan, Smith worked as the lightweight coach. He helped guide the Chippewas to a 14th place finish at the NCAA Tournament.
Smith was a two-time Wisconsin State Champion at Chippewa Falls High School and finished his career with a 117-2 record. He went on to compete at Central Michigan University where he was named Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year. While at CMU, Smith was a four-time National Qualifier and was ranked as high as fourth in the country at 125 pounds. During his senior season, the Chippewas reached their highest ranking in program history when they ended the 2007-2008 dual season ranked second in the nation. Luke received a Bachelors Degree at CMU in Sports Management and Athletic Coaching.
In 2004 Smith placed fourth at the Greco-Roman Olympic Trials. In 2006, he finished fourth at the Senior Freestyle World Team Trials and was a University World Team Member. Smith is currently still competing and working towards the 2012 Olympic Trials.
