Football Monarchs to Play Appalachian State in 2015 and 2016
NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University has agreed to a home-and-home series with fellow FBS newcomer Appalachian State, for 2015 and 2016, ODU Athletic Director Dr. Wood Selig announced on Tuesday.
The series will start in Norfolk in 2015 and Old Dominion will play in Boone, N.C. in 2016.
“We are excited to add Appalachian State to our future schedule. They have been an excellent program at the FCS level and I am sure they will do well at the FBS level,” ODU Head Coach Bobby Wilder said. “Transitioning can be a challenge as we know but they have an outstanding fan base just like we do here at Old Dominion which should make for two sold out games in Norfolk and Boone.”
Appalachian State, like ODU, is in a transition year as they are moving to the FBS and the Sun Belt. The Mountaineers won three-straight FCS National Championships from 2005-07 and have won the Southern Conference Championship seven out of the last eight years. Prior to 2013, App State had the second most wins among Division I teams with 87, trailing only Boise State who had 93. At the beginning of the 2013 season, Appalachian had 12 players on NFL rosters, including former two-time Walter Payton FCS Player of the Year, Armanti Edwards.
This is completes the 2015 non-conference schedule for Old Dominion. ODU will play at Eastern Michigan, host Norfolk State, NC State and Appalachian. The Monarchs will play at NC State in 2014 and host Eastern Michigan in 2014.
