The Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks (3-4)
The Lady Hawks enter Saturday’s contest on a one game skid after Monmouth (1-7) picked up their first win (67-65) of the season against UMES on Dec. 3. Before the setback, Maryland Eastern Shore was on a two-game winning streak after defeating Lincoln University of Pa. on Nov. 26 and George Mason on Nov. 23. The win over George Mason was monumental for the program, as it was their first victory over an Atlantic-10 opponent under 10th-year head coach Fred Batchelor. It was also the Lady Hawks first ever victory over George Mason in the series, which dates back to 1988.
Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is highlighted by junior guard Jessica Long, who remains the squad’s leading scorer with 116 points after a monster performance against Lincoln in which she registered her first-career double-double, racked up 24 points, and added a career-high 10 boards.
Leading the Lady Hawks in rebounds is sophomore forward Alexis Udoji, who has grabbed 63 thus far on the year and is averaging 10.5 per game. Udoji is also coming off an impressive performance after recording her fourth-career double-double and a career-high 15 rebounds against Lincoln.
The Lady Hawks are coached by Fred Batchelor, the program’s all-time winningest coach. In his 10 years with the program he has notched 115 wins and has turned out a winning conference record in seven of the last nine seasons. Just a season ago, despite the Lady Hawks 8-20 overall record, Batchelor guided freshmen Ashleigh Claybrooks and Alexis Udoji to All-MEAC Rookie Team honors.
The Old Dominion University Lady Monarch’s Last Time Out (4-4)
Old Dominion University women’s basketball history was made on Wednesday afternoon in the Lady Monarchs 90-57 route of the UMass Lowell River Hawks (0-8), as the all-time Ted Constant Convocation Center’s attendance for a women’s hoops game was broken. 8,086 fans were on-hand for ODU’s 11 a.m. tipoff and victory today as part of the third annual Education Day for Norfolk Public Schools, topping the previous attendance record of 7,774 in 2010 when the Lady Vols from Tennessee visited the Ted.
Over 6,100 students from 32 surrounding elementary schools made for an electrifying atmosphere at the Ted for this year’s Education Day; shattering last year’s total of 2,800 elementary kids for the second annual event.
The Lady Monarchs (4-4) were led by junior co-captain Shae Kelley who recorded her third consecutive double-double with 26 points, 16 rebounds, three blocked shots, three steals and three assists.
Becca Allison poured in a new career high of 17 points (5-6 FG, 3-3 3PT), and also contributed five boards, four assists and two steals. Also in double figures for the Lady Monarchs was sophomore Galaisha Goodhope who went for 10 points, seven assists (tied career high) and five steals. George Washington transfer Chelisa Painter scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 13 minutes of work.
In a game that UML never took a lead or even tied the score, Old Dominion led by as many 35 with 3:56 to play in the contest. ODU dominated in rebounding (64-37), assists (23-8) and points in the paint (56-28).
