IRVING, Texas – Old Dominion University senior defensive linemen Nate Barnes was named one of 16 Conference USA Spirit of Service Award Winners, C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced on Wednesday.

"Everyone associated with Old Dominion University is very proud of Nate Barnes for being recognized by C-USA for this prestigious award. Nate has been involved with numerous volunteer opportunities during his career," ODU Head Football Coach Bobby Wilder said. "He truly exemplifies the spirit of community and helping young people realize they can accomplish all of their goals in life with a positive mental attitude."

The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.

Barnes played in eight football games for Old Dominion in 2013, recording 10 tackles and a pass breakup. Barnes earned a bachelor's degree in human services in May 2013 and is currently working toward a second degree in criminal justice. The Newport News, Va., native mentored two boys at the St. Patrick's School, working with them and motivating them to succeed. Barnes has also volunteered with ODU's bone marrow drive and Special Olympics.

The Spirit of Service award will be presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing Conference USA's fall sports: football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.
