Six Monarchs Debut in NCAA Wrestling Coaches Poll
NORFOLK, Va. - Six ODU Monarchs were a part of the first NCAA coaches panel rankings, which were released Thursday. The final rankings will determine the qualifiers for the 2014 NCAA Championships.
Brandon Jeske (125), Chris Mecate (141), Alexander Richardson (149), Tristan Warner (157), Jack Dechow (184), and Kevin Beazley (197) were all ranked by the coaches panel. The coaches rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament. In order to be eligible wrestlers must have participated in at least five matches against Division I opponents in their respective weight class.
True freshman Jeske (Virginia Beach, Va.) is ranked No. 27 and is 13-10 this season.
Redshirt sophomore Mecate is ranked No. 4 by the coaches and also by several polls (InterMat, WrestlingReport, D1 College Wrestling, etc.). Mecate qualified for the NCAA's last year as a redshirt freshman.
Sophomore Richardson is ranked No. 20 and is 17-6 this season. Richardson qualified last year for the NCAA's as a true freshman. Redshirt junior Warner is ranked No. 26 and has an 11-8 record. Warner qualified for the NCAA's two seasons ago. Redshirt freshman Dechow is ranked No. 20 and sports an 8-3 record this year. Dechow was recently named an additional nominee to the MAC Player of the Week.
Redshirt freshman Kevin Beazley is ranked No. 27 by the first edition of the NCAA coaches poll. Beazley is 13-8 this season for the Monarchs.
ODU takes on non conference opponent Binghamton Friday at 7. The Monarchs continue MAC action against the University of Buffalo Saturday at 7.
