Billy Curling Receives MAC Weekly Honor

NORFOLK, Va. - ODU redshirt senior wrestler Billy Curling was named an additional nominee to the MAC Wrestler of the Week for his two victories last week.

Curling defeated Ben Price of Binghamton by a 22-8 major decision last Friday. Old Dominion's 174-pounder has won five of his last six matches including a 7-4 decision victory against Buffalo's Rkok Ndokaj last Saturday. Curling is 10-7 this season, has three major decision wins and leads the Monarchs with 81 points put up in dual matches this season.

Northern Iowa's Ryan Loder was named MAC Wrestler of the Week, while Nick Flannery (Buffalo), Sam Wheeler (Kent State) and KeVon Powell (Ohio) joined Curling on the additional nominee list.

Billy Curling, Old Dominion—Senior, Chesapeake, Va.
Old Dominion senior Billy Curling completed an undefeated week by defeating Ben Price of Binghamton and Rkok Ndokaj of Buffalo. At 174 pounds, Curling beat Price by a 22-8 major decision, which was the most points put up in a single match this year by Old Dominion. Curling defeated MAC opponent Ndokaj by a 7-4 decision. Curling is 10-7 this season and 2-1 in MAC competition. The redshirt senior leads the Monarchs with 81 points put up in team dual matches this season.

Ryan Loder, Northern Iowa—Senior, Granite Bay, Calif.
Northern Iowa senior Ryan Loder earned his fastest career fall over No. 10 Johnny Eblen of Missouri. Loder’s 26-second pin was his first this season. The three-time NCAA qualifier earned his first all-American title last year. He has been ranked in the top five all season by InterMat. The senior hasn’t lost a dual match since the 2011-12 season and has never given up bonus points in any match. Last year he earned a spot at No. 5 on the Panthers’ all-time list for best career winning percentage. With a 5-0 overall and dual record (2-0 MAC), he remains the only undefeated wrestler on the UNI squad. He is the conference favorite. He is majoring in business.

Nick Flannery, Buffalo—Senior, Framingham, Mass. (Framingham High School)
Buffalo senior Nick Flannery finished his weekend with a 1-1 record as he defeated the #4 wrestler at 141 pounds on Saturday night against #23 Old Dominion. Flannery defeated #4 Chris Mecate in impressive fashion by the score of 12-7. Flannery earned five points in the second period before closing out the match with four points and a point for riding time. Flannery now holds a 14-12 overall record and his last two match victories have came against ranked wrestlers.
Sam Wheeler, Kent State—Sophomore, Copley, Ohio
Kent State sophomore Sam Wheeler went 2-0 on the weekend, improving to 4-0 in MAC duals.  He defeated Ohio’s Ryan Garringer 12-5 Friday night, recording five takedowns.  On Sunday, Wheeler trailed Central Michigan’s Craig Kelliher 6-0 in the second, before battling back for a 9-8 victory.  Wheeler is 25-4 on the year and 14-2 in duals.
KeVon Powell, Ohio—Sophomore, Romeoville, Ill. (Montini Catholic High School)
Ohio sophomore KeVon Powell registered a pair of wins this past week as he led the Bobcats to a pair of team wins over Kent State and Buffalo. His first win on the week came over Kent State's Edilberto Vinas.  Powell defeated Vinas 9-5 and clinched the Bobcats' 21-16 win over the Flashes Friday night inside the Convocation Center. On Sunday, Powell edged Buffalo's Max Soria 10-9 in helping Ohio to a convincing 34-6 triumph at Buffalo. Powell has now three of his last five matches. 

ODU hosts two MAC opponents this weekend including Northern Illinois on Friday at 7:30 and Central Michigan Sunday, February 2 at 1 p.m. from the Ted Constant Center.
