Monarchs Travel to Ohio Sunday for MAC Showdown

ATHENS, OHIO - The Old Dominion University wrestling team travels to Athens to face Ohio University Sunday at 5:30 p.m. from the Convocation Center.

The Monarchs (7-8, 3-2 in the MAC) climbed all the way to a tie for third place in the MAC after picking up two home wins against Northern Illinois by a 23-12 final last Friday and Central Michigan by an impressive 24-7 final last Sunday.

ODU's Billy Curling (174) is coming off a victory against the No. 8-ranked Mike Ottinger of Central Michigan. At 141 pounds, Chris Mecate defeated CMU's No. 9-ranked Zach Horan, while true freshman Brandon Jeske (125) defeated No. 12-ranked Corey Keener last Sunday. 

Monarchs 157-pounder Tristan Warner is coming off a 6-2 decision victory over No. 17-ranked Luke Smith of CMU and Warner is now ranked at No. 19 in the latest InterMat poll.

Old Dominion wrestlers Brandon Jeske (125), Chris Mecate (141), Alexander Richardson (149), Tristan Warner (157), Billy Curling (174) and Jack Dechow (184) all finished 2-0 last weekend against Northern Illinois and Central Michigan.

ODU (7-8, 3-2) vs. Ohio (9-3, 4-3) Sunday 5:30 p.m.

Series Record: ODU Trail 1-0. First meeting began in 2004.

Previous Meeting: Januray 15, 2005- Ohio edged ODU by a 20-18 final. The Monarchs received victories from Christian Staylor (125), B. J. Compton (133), Hunter Davenport (149), Robby Gosnell (165) and Adam Wright (184).

Scouting Ohio- The Bobcats have won three of their last four conference dual meets and are 4-0 at home this season. Ohio falls just outside the AWN top-25 with the most votes this week. Ohio is led by junior and No. 8-ranked Tywan Claxton (149), who is 21-2 and 7-0 in the conference this season. Redshirt senior and No. 11-ranked Jeremy Johnson (285) is 28-3 and 7-0 in the MAC. Redshirt sophomores Cody Walters (174) and Phil Wellington (197) are both ranked in the top-10. Walters is 7-1 and 4-1 in the MAC and Wellington is 25-2 and a perfect 5-0 in the MAC this year.
