About the Miners
Sean Kugler completed his first season with his alma mater in 2013, as the Miners finished 2-10. Prior to being named the head coach at UTEP, Kugler had spent the previous 11 years in the NFL, coaching the offensive line for the Steelers, Lions and Bills.
Running backs Aaron Jones and Nathan Jeffery led the Miners in rushing in 2013 . Jones led the team with 811 yards and four touchdowns while Jeffery added 532 yards and a team-best five scores.
Jameill Showers completed 107-of-188 passes for 1,263 yards and 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also rushed for 195 yards and four TD’s.
Eric Tomlinson is the Miners’ leading returning receiver with 30 receptions for 304 yards and one touchdown.
Defensive leader Devin Cockrell had 46 solo tackles and 30 assisted tackles ending the 2013 season with 76 total tackles. Following Cockrell was Dashone Smith with 37 solo tackles and 32 assisted tackles totaling at 69 tackles, and also added two interceptions for the 2013 season.
Over the past few years, the Miners have sent 10 players to go on to play in the NFL including Cornelius Brown, with the Chicago Bears, Oniel Cousins who plays for the Baltimore Ravens, Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2008, the Miners had three players taken in the NFL Draft, the most players chosen since the 2000 draft.
The second opponent ODU will play from the C-USA West division, will take place in the historic Sun Bowl Stadium. The stadium has hosted the Sun Bowl college bowl game since 1963. This will be ODU’s first time playing UTEP.
