NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion wrestling Monarchs will return the 18th most team points next season according to TheOpenMat.com.
Old Dominion returns 17.5 points from the 2013-14 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which is more than Virginia, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Duke. ODU is second in the MAC in team returning points ahead of Northern Iowa, Central Michigan, Ohio and Kent State.
This past season ODU sent six wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament including true freshman Brandon Jeske (125), redshirt sophomore Chris Mecate (141), sophomore Alexander Richardson (149), redshirt junior Tristan Warner (157), redshirt senior Billy Curling (174) and redshirt freshman Jack Dechow (184) who became an All-American with his fourth place finish in his first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Dechow put up 12.5 points for the Monarchs going 4-2 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, while Jeske put up three points, Mecate one point and Richardson one point.
Next season Old Dominion adds high school state champions 165-pounder T.C. Warner (Cumberland Valley HS, Pa.) and 133-pounder Emilio Saavedra (Modesto HS, Ca.). ODU also brings in second place New Jersey state runner-up 174-pounder Joey Balboni (David Brearley HS, N.J.).
