Nikol Hristova Named C-USA Player of the Week & Makes School History
IRVING, Texas. – Old Dominion University women’s tennis player, Nikol Hristova, was named Conference USA Player of the Week on April 8 by conference officials, which is the first time in school history that a women’s tennis player has garnered the award.
The sophomore from Sofia, Bulgaria collected this honor after earning victories in all three of her singles and doubles battles last week. Currently riding a five-game winning streak in singles play, Hristova defeated both Michaela Meszarosova (So. Alabama) and Chelsi Russell (MSU) in straight sets to improve her season singles record to 11-4 for the season, with all 15 results coming at the No. 1 slot for the Lady Monarchs. Hristova has not suffered defeat in singles action since March 12 when she lost to No. 1 Duke’s 6th-ranked Beatrice Capra.
Hristova also went on to take down South Alabama’s duo of Emily Newton and Michaela Meszarosova to extend her doubles winning streak to six and overall doubles record to 10-2. In doubles against Morgan State, Hristova paired up with teammate Faith Atiso; however, their match was called off due to the clinch rule, when they were leading 7-4 and needing just one more point for victory.
Hristova and the rest of the Lady Monarchs will be right back in action this Friday, April 11, against Georgetown at 12:00 p.m. in Washington D.C., which will be the last regular season match for Old Dominion before hosting the 2014 C-USA Women’s tennis Championships on April 16-20.
