NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University men’s tennis team fell to the Tribe of William and Mary by a score of 4-3 on Saturday afternoon on a gorgeous day at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. Saturday’s match also marked senior day for ODU’s Dante Terenzio, who was honored by Aljosa Piric after the completion of double’s play.

William and Mary’ victory over the Monarchs pushed the Tribe’s lead over Old Dominion in the Optima Health Challenge to 50-35. The Optima Health Challenge is an on-going annual competition between the two schools, in which points are accumulated for wins in head-to-head matches. 55 points are needed to clinch a school’s victory. One lacrosse match (10 points) and one baseball game (5 points) are the only two contests, which remain on this year’s schedule.

The loss puts the Tennis Monarchs with a 12-8 record for the 2014 regular season, while the Tribe advance to 16-8 on the year and are winners in 14 of their last 17 matches.

On Saturday, action got started with doubles, as Jonas Kuwert and the senior Dante Terenzio got the better of Will Juggins and Aaron Chaffee 8-3.

It was Old Dominion’s tandem of Koen Wiggemans and Zvonimir Podvinski, who clinched the double’s point for ODU, winning their tiebreaker by a score of 7-4.

ODU’s No. 77 Carlos Lopez Villa wasted little time handling business against Ben Hoogland (6-3, 6-3). Lopez Villa finishes the regular season with an incredible 19-1 overall record.

Jonas Kuwert performed brilliantly for Aljosa Piric’s Monarchs, defeating Scott Huang 6-1, 7-5. Kuwert is now 12-8 on the season for Old Dominion.
