EVANSTON, Ill. -- Old Dominion's Jack Dechow finished as the runner-up in the 184 lb. weight class of the 54th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Friday at Northwestern. The fifth-year senior fell in the championship match that was broadcast live on the Big Ten Network to Nebraska's returning NCAA finalist TJ Dudley by a narrow 4-2 decision.

"I thought Dechow and Beazley both had a good Midlands performance," head coach Steve Martin said. "Beazley beat a returning All-American in the quarterfinals, and we made a coaches' decision to withhold him from competition today. Jack beat a returning national champion last night, which was a huge win for him. He beat another nationally-ranked kid in the semis this morning from Rutgers. Tonight's bout with Dudley could have easily gone either way. His last shot is one he needs to finish in the future. Someone like Dudley you have to wrestle at least one time to get a feel for him. Looking forward, we are excited to start the MAC schedule next week. We need to go back to practice this week and start preparing for those competitions. As always, the goal is to get on the top of the podium in March, and that's what we are working for."

After surrendering a stalling point in the first period, Dechow fell behind Dudley 4-1 in the second period after the top-seeded Cornhusker earned an escape and a takedown before Dechow got an escape of his own. In the third period, Dechow earned an escape and got in on a pair of shots, but the Richmond, Illinois native could not convert in the waning seconds as Dudley took the bout, 4-2.

In Friday morning's semifinals, Dechow defeated the sixth seed and 11th-ranked Nick Gravina of Rutgers, 4-2 SV-2. The wrestlers went to overtime tied 1-1 before each earned an escape in the first set of tiebreakers. Deadlocked at 2-2, Dechow scored a takedown on the edge to earn his second trip to the Midlands finals.

Kevin Beazley medically forfeited in his 197 lb. semifinal bout versus top-seeded Nate Rotert of South Dakota State. Beazley placed sixth place after medically forfeiting his next two bouts.
