WASHINGTON -- The Old Dominion wrestling team (6-10, 2-5 MAC) fell to American (4-8, 0-7 EIWA), 25-14, in Washington, D.C. Sunday afternoon in the Monarchs' final road dual meet of the season.

"We were disappointed in the end result of the dual meet today," head coach Steve Martin said. "Alex Madrigal lost a close match against a nationally-ranked opponent, which was a winnable match. Kevin Budock also wrestled very hard in an eleven minute double overtime match where he scored the only takedown. Larry Early and Antonio Agee looked very impressive and scored a lot of points, while Seldon Wright and Jack Dechow controlled their matches for solid wins. We are looking forward to finishing up our dual meet season at home against Kent State next weekend and hope to get a good crowd."

The match began at 133, where American fifth-year senior Esteban Gomez-Rivera held on to a 4-3 victory over Alex Madrigal after securing two first period takedowns. The Eagles' Jack Mutchnik followed up at 141 with a 5-4 decision in the second set of tiebreakers via more accumulated riding time to give American a 6-0 lead.

At 149, American's Michael Sprague broke open a 4-4 deadlock by coming out on top of a scramble and securing a fall over Michael Hayes at the 6:29 mark to give the Eagles a 12-0 lead.

Larry Early responded for the Monarchs at 157, scoring six takedowns en route to a dominating 14-5 major over Tom Page, cutting the American lead to 12-4. Seldon Wright followed up at 165 with a decision victory over Cole Moseley, 8-5, to trim the deficit to 12-7 heading into intermission.

True freshman Antonio Agee kept the Monarchs' momentum rolling after the break, earning a 12-3 major decision over Joe Salvi at 174. At 184, No. 8 Jack Dechow pushed the action for seven minutes en route to a 4-2 victory over Jason Grimes, giving the Monarchs their first lead of the dual meet, 14-12.

However, a first period fall at 197 by American's No. 29 Jeric Kasunic over Kaleab Fetahi reclaimed the Eagles' lead, 18-14, with two bouts remaining.

American closed out the match with victories at 285 and 125, as Brett Dempsey outlasted Will Hilliard, 3-2, at heavyweight before the Eagles' 10th-ranked Josh Terao defeated Steven Simpson, , at 125.
