Old Dominion Perseveres in 4-3 Victory Over Iowa Hawkeyes

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s tennis team (9-4) came back from a 3-2 deficit to claim a 4-3 win, while handing Iowa (11-2) its second loss of the season on Monday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. ODU has now won three matches in a row and is 7-1 at home this season.

Doubles tandems Natalya Malenko/Adriana Rajkovic and Borislava Botusharova/Marijana Novakovic each won to give ODU an early 1-0 advantage.

No. 84 Holly Hutchinson made it 2-0 for the Lady Monarchs with a straight set win over Zoe Douglas (6-4, 6-2) in No. 2 singles.

After dropping the first set, No. 89 Borislava Botusharova rallied to defeat Elise Van Heuvelen (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) in No. 1 singles tying the team score at 3-3.

It was Ingrid Vojcinakova who sealed the deal for Old Dominion in No. 4 singles winning sets two and three over Adorabol Huckleby (6-7, 6-2, 6-1).

Did You Know?
ODU assistant coach, Toni Bickford, enjoyed an outstanding career as a student-athlete at Iowa, becoming the first four-time All-Big Ten honoree. She was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1999 and earned two NCAA Tournament bids in doubles and as a senior was the first ever Iowa women's tennis player to earn a trip to the NCAA singles tournament. She graduated from Iowa in 2002.

On Tuesday, March 14 at 3:30 p.m., the Lady Monarchs will welcome No. 47 Oklahoma to the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. On Sunday, Mar 19, Old Dominion will welcome Conference USA foe No. 48 Marshall at 11:00 a.m. Admission for all is free.
