GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team played East Carolina to a 1-1 draw in its first game of the spring season. Weather moved game from Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening.

“This was a great first game for our spring season as it was really high tempo and competitive,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “We were looking at a different shape and I think for our first game in it, we did really well. We looked solid defensively with dominant performances from our back line, led by Jackie Stroud, Kathryn Hill and Natalie Johnson. Also, it was great to see Karlie Kellstrom step in and play a very solid first half. I was pleased with the work rate of some of our players and thought in midfield Deirdre Bradley was excellent marshalling from the center of the field, as well as a mature performance from freshman Talia Tapper. On the ball, of course we continue to work to build new partnerships in attack and had a few chances on goal; however, we will look to develop that side of things this spring.”

In the 16th minute, Old Dominion scored through a slotted pass from freshman Keri Vornadore to Iris Achterhof, who calmly finished in the far corner of the goal.

“This was a good team performance and a composed finish from Iris made this a very solid start to our season,” said Hind.

ODU dominated for long spells in the half and almost added a second goal from a passage of play from back to front, which culminated in Karlie Kellstrom hitting the side netting.

ECU later equalized from a low cross and well timed run to level the game at 1-1.

The second half saw strong spells from both teams. Despite a late push from ODU, the Lady Monarchs could not find the winner.

Old Dominion will play its second of five spring games on March 26, when ODU hosts VCU at the ODU Soccer Complex for a 6:00 p.m. start.
