Old Dominion and Maryland Play to Scoreless Draw

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion women’s soccer team remained unbeaten for the spring season after playing Maryland to a 0-0 draw over the weekend at the ODU Soccer Complex. The Lady Soccer Monarchs are now 1-0-3 for the 2017 spring season.

“Every game this spring has brought different challenges and this game was a little frustrating for us to work out, especially in the first half,” said ODU head coach Angie Hind. “Maryland made it difficult for us initially by playing a high line which packed the field but also I felt we were forced to try and make a lot of the play.”

The first half was highlighted by two chances, one from each team. Against the pressed up Maryland defensive line, Madison Hogan made a run in behind the line and nearly scored, but Maryland’s keeper made the save.

At the other end of the pitch, Krista Moisio made a save off a one-versus-one breakaway to keep the game level at halftime.

ODU took control of possession in the second half, as Gaby Bentley, Cristina Bashara and a Jackie Stroud each had chances. The Lady Monarchs were awarded a PK mid-way into the half; however, failed to capitalize, missing the target and keeping the game tied.

“Despite the game finishing 0-0, there were certainly plenty of goal opportunities and while we probably should have converted some of the chances we had, at the other end Krista Moisio had a great game today and came up with a few big moments,” Hind continued. “Defensively this spring, we have looked solid and are growing in confidence, which is great to see. In attack we have some good moments, now we need to just be a little more confident and decisive, which I know will come.”

Old Dominion will be back in action for its fifth and final game of the spring season on Friday, April 21, when the Lady Monarchs host Virginia Wesleyan for a 7:00 p.m. start at the ODU Soccer Complex.

ODU will also hold its annual ODU Alumni Game the following day on Saturday, April 22.
