Wrestling Set For 2017 UWW Cadet & University Nationals

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion wrestling sends 17 grapplers to participate in the 2017 UWW Cadet & University Nationals this weekend, June 1-4, in Akron, Ohio. Athletes from across the country will partake in the four-day event hosted by the University of Akron.

As with the NCAA Tournament the top eight winners of the University Division receive awards acknowledging their skill and athleticism. Also on the line is a chance to earn a spot on the 2017 University World Team.

Steven Simpson will represent ODU at 57 kg, while Jaquan Loney will wrestle at 61 kilos. NCAA qualifier Alex Madrigal and true-freshman Kevin Budock will scuffle at 65 kilograms for the Monarchs.

Kenan Carter, Will Verallis, and Larry Early will all get bouts in at 70 kilos to gain some valuable offseason expereince.

The Monarchs have four guys wrestling at 74 kilos in Seldon Wright, Chris Maurillo, Shane Jones and Terrell Forbes. Wright was the primary starter at 165 pounds for the Silver and Blue this season and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament in his sophomore season.

Wrapping up the travel list for the Monarchs are the heavyweights with the Drugac twins, Luke and Dean, as well as Kaleab Fetahi grappling at 80kg. Antonio Agee alone competes at 86kg while Will Hilliard and Ali Wahab challenge the competition at 125kg.

Competition begins on Friday, June 2, as the University & UWW Cadet Greco-Roman bouts take place all day starting at 9a.m. with the finals later in the day.

On Saturday, June 3, the University (Men) & UWW Cadet Freestyle events commence with the preliminaries starting at 9 a.m. and running all day.

The Freestyle event wraps on Sunday, June 4, where the top eight in each weight class receive awards and the top two at each weight class have the opportunity to qualify for the 2017 University World Team.
