NORFOLK, Va. -- Former Old Dominion pitcher Victor Diaz has joined the Monarch coaching staff as a Volunteer Assistant, head coach Chris Finwood announced on Tuesday.

Diaz, who pitched at Old Dominion from 2013 to 2016, previously coached at Kentucky Wesleyan College for one season in 2017. Diaz fills the volunteer vacancy following Logan Robbins' promotion to Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.

“I am so happy to welcome Vic back to our program," said Finwood. "I think it's always a plus when you have a young man like Vic who is an ODU alum to help us sell all the great things about this University."

In his lone season at Kentucky Wesleyan in 2017, Diaz helped lead KWC to a Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship and a DII NCAA Regional appearance. Under the guidance of Diaz, the Kentucky Wesleyan pitching staff posted a team ERA of 4.60 and threw a total of nine complete games and five shutouts. The KWC staff also struck out 326 in 422.1 innings, while walking only 152.

"I am thankful for the opportunity Coach Finwood has given me to return to ODU," said Diaz. "This is an exciting time to be a part of this program and this coaching staff. ODU is a special place for me. All of the support around this University and baseball program is second to none."

During his four-year career at ODU, Diaz compiled a 15-7 career record with a 4.39 ERA. In his senior campaign in 2016, the New Jersey native went 6-4 with a 3.78 ERA as the Sunday starter.

"Vic was a fantastic competitor and teammate when he pitched here," continued Finwood. "He will bring that same energy and passion to his coaching duties."
