Two Boats Place in Top-10 at Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Old Dominion women’s rowing team competed at the Head of the Hooch on Nov. 4 and 5 on the Tennessee River and placed two boats in the top 10 on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Monarchs raced in two events. The Women’s Championship 8+ had two entries for the Monarchs. Finishing with a time of 17:27.80, Amanda Brown, Erin Welsh, Monica Jory, Courtney Moore, Haley Crispell, Danielle Yoxthimer, Olivia Taylor, Jillian Moran, Monique McNealy (coxswain) claimed a 14th place finish.

Also in the Women’s Championship 8+, Francesca Gonzalez, Irena Tobola, Lysette Rivera-Cortes, Brooke Ripley, Madeline Doherty, Margaret Fluharty, Alexa Williams, Taylor Phy, Ave McFadden (coxswain) finished behind the leading Monarch boat with a time of 17:48.08.

To finish Saturday’s competition, Haley Crispell, Jillian Moran, Olivia Taylor, Taylor Phy, Morgan Dee (coxswain) competed in the Women’s Championship 4+. Finishing ahead of Duke, Georgia Tech, and more, the ladies finished with a time of 18:52.81 to mark a 17th place finish to wrap up Saturday.

On Sunday, one boat competing in the Women’s Open 8+ on Sunday compiling of Monica Jory, Erin Welsh, Haley Crispell, Courtney Moore, Olivia Taylor, Taylor Phy, Alexa Williams, Jillian Moran, and Monique McNealy (coxswain) propelled to a fourth place finish out of 18 teams. The fourth place finishers competed at a time of 18:09.07, an improvement for the squad.

“We made some adjustments from the first day of racing for Sunday that we thought would produce a more competitive look and it was successful,” said head coach Daniel Garbutt.

Finishing behind Boat A, Entry B: Francesca Gonzalez, Irena Tobola, Amanda Brown, Brooke Ripley, Madeline Doherty, Margaret Fluharty, Emma Dobson, Danielle Yoxthimer, Ave McFadden (coxswain) in Boat B finished strong in seventh place.

Also competing in the Women’s Open 8+, Kenya Thomas, Lauren Acosta, Anna Shugayev, Aliyah Rivers, Rachel Miller, Naomi Trader, Victoria Thies, Jameela Lamb. Talya Cohen (coxswain) placed 13th in the race with a time of 20:05.23.

“All three boats that competed in the Open 8 event exhibited the kind of progress that the staff has seen this fall. I feel strongly that the depth within the second and third Open 8 groups of the team has increased greatly since last season.”
