Season Comes to an End at NCAA Championships for Wrestling Monarchs
CLEVELAND, Ohio – After the second day of action at the NCAA Championships, the remaining two Monarchs in Michael McGee and Larry Early were eliminated in the morning session. Michael McGee (125) and Larry Early (157) both end their seasons as first-time national qualifiers. Alex Madrigal (141) and Seldon Wright (174) both end their 2018 campaigns as two-time national qualifiers.
“I thought both McGee and Early wrestled hard in their consolation bouts but came up short. We were happy with their effort but it’s very difficult to come back after losing the first round, said head coach Steve Martin. “McGee lost to returning All-American Sean Russell from Edinboro, which we knew would be a tough match. I don’t think he was in the zone as much as he was in the first match against #5 Sean Fausz. Early gave his guy a close match today. Bottom line is we knew it was going to be a younger team this year. This stage you really have to experience and know what it’s all about.”
Ending his freshman campaign, Michael McGee dropped his second consolation match to #11 Sean Russell of Edinboro by an 8-1 decision. McGee was one of 16 true freshman in the tournament and finished his season with a 30-12 record.
At 157 pounds, Larry Early suffered a loss by a 7-5 decision to #4 Josh Shields of Arizona State. Early finishes his redshirt sophomore campaign, 31-13.
“We knew coming in we were an underdog and had opportunities for guys to get on the podium. Looking forward our future is very bright as we return nine out of 10 starters and we will have Kevin Budock coming off a redshirt year. Our incoming guys will push our current guys in the practice room and compete for starting spots. Next year we will have serious depth and could put some guys on the podium.”
After the third session, ODU lands in T49th.
