VERONA, Wisc. -- Through the opening 18 holes at the NCAA Madison Regional, the Old Dominion women's golf team is tied for tenth at the University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wisconsin.

"We were pretty good start to finish," said head coach Mallory Hetzel. "I was happy with the amount of birdies that we made."

The Monarchs (+7) carded a 295 as a team on Monday and sit five strokes behind sixth-place Wisconsin (+2). The top six teams advance to the NCAA Championship.

ODU is the top non-Power 5 school at the regional through the opening round.

Individually, Charlotte De Corte (-1) had the best round of any Monarch with a 71. De Corte's four birdies led the team.

"It's a good course to be a little bit more conservative," said De Corte. "I thought it was a good, solid first round."

Maggie Simmermacher (+1) used a hot start that included an eagle on No. 2 to card a 73 and is tied for 26th. Simmermacher was 4-under through the first four holes.

Katerina Vlasinova (+2) finished one stroke behind Simmermacher and is tied for 43rd.

Rounding out the lineup were Abigail Portyrata (+5) and Sana Tufail (+5). Both players are tied for 66th.

"If we can clean up some of the mistakes that we made in the middle, I think that we'll be in good shape the next two days," said Hetzel.

Virginia (-9) leads the 18-team regional, while UVA's Beth Lillie (-5) and Wisconsin's Gabby Curtis (-5) sit atop the individual leaderboard.

Action continues tomorrow with 18 holes. The Monarchs tee off at 9 a.m. ET on the back nine and will be paired with Iowa State and Campbell. Live scoring is available on GolfStat, while behind-the-scenes interviews and photos can be found on Twitter at @ODUWGolf
