John Penn Added as Volunteer Assistant
By ODU Athletics
“We are fired up to add John to our coaching staff," said Finwood. "John interviewed a couple weeks ago and really impressed everyone with his energy and knowledge. He came highly recommended after spending the last two years working for Marc Rardin at Iowa Western Community College, who I think is one of the very best coaches in the country at any level."
Penn comes to ODU from Iowa Western, where he served as an assistant coach.
"I'm grateful to have a great opportunity to come in to program that has traditionally been a powerhouse," said Penn. "Coach Finwood has made himself renowned in the coaching world and I am very fortunate to have an opportunity to come in and help a great program."
Penn completed his second season at Iowa Western in 2018, helping lead the squad to a 54-7 overall record and a spot in the Juco World Series. The Reivers hit .357 as a team and averaged 8.5 runs per game.
"John will be in charge of our catchers and assist with our hitters as well," continued Finwood. "I hope everyone will join me in welcoming John to our Monarch baseball family."
At Iowa Western, Penn worked closely with the Reivers' catchers and hitters, and also assisted with recruiting.
Prior to Iowa Western, Penn spent his first two seasons coaching at Bluffton University, a DIII school located in Ohio, where he served as the graduate assistant.
A native of Ohio, Penn graduated from Wabash College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Rhetoric and went on to obtain his Master’s Degree in Business Administration with a Sports Management concentration from Bluffton University. At Wabash, Penn was a relief pitcher and a member of the 2011 NCAC Conference Championship team.
