NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 22 Old Dominion field hockey team will play its first game at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex since September 10, as the Monarchs welcome Georgetown on Friday, October 4 at 5:00 p.m. in a BIG EAST Battle. The Monarchs will be back in action two days later as they travel to Charlottesville to take on No. 8 Virginia on Sunday, October 6 at 1:00 p.m.
In its last game, ODU lost its first BIG EAST conference match of the season, falling 6-2 against No. 3 UConn on the road. In the game, sophomore goalkeeper Cam MacGillivray saved a career-high 11 shots, while senior Erin Huffman and sophomore Riley Taylor each registered a goal apiece. Senior Alexandria Brewer earned an assist on both Monarch goals.
The Monarchs have lost their last two games after riding a five-game win streak. Friday’s match will be ODU’s first home game in nearly a month after being on the road in its last five matches.
Senior Rebecca Birch leads the team with 10 points, registering four goals and two assists so far this season. Marlee McClendon has dished out a team-high five assists, and Taylor is second on the team in goals (three), assists (three) and points (nine).
Sophomore goalkeeper Cam MacGillivray has collected 34 saves and has posted two shutouts in this campaign.
This past weekend, the Hoyas lost a pair of 2-1 games, the first to BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac at home and the second to American on the road. In its game against the Eagles, Georgetown went into the fourth quarter leading 1-0, but couldn’t hang on, as American scored two goals late in regulation to secure the victory. 10 different Hoyas have scored a goal in this campaign, but none more than senior Lindsay Getz who has netted four goals on the year. Ciara Weets sits in goal for the Hoyas, as she has accrued 53 saves over 10 games.
The Monarchs have been playing the Hoyas since ODU joined the BIG EAST Conference in 2013. Overall, ODU holds a 5-1 record against Georgetown, but last season the Hoyas earned a 2-1 overtime victory over the Monarchs.
Since the start of the season, Virginia has been firmly placed as a top-10 team in the country on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Coaches Poll. The Cavaliers are led by their defense, as they have posted four shutouts this season and have only allowed more than one goal twice. Lauren Hausheer, UVA’s goalkeeper, boasts a goals against average of 0.97, the seventh-best mark in the nation.
ODU hosted UVA in the opening game of the 2019 season earlier this year, with the then-No. 11 ranked Cavaliers earning the 3-0 win. In their last meeting in Charlottesville last season, the Monarchs left town with a 2-1 overtime victory. Overall, ODU holds a 36-18 record over UVA.
