Kevin Beazley Claims All-American Honors at NCAA Championships
By ODU Athletics
ST. LOUIS -- Old Dominion wrestler Kevin Beazley earned a 7-6 decision over Iowa's Cash Wilcke in Friday night's "blood round" to secure his first All-American finish at the 2017 NCAA DI Wrestling Championships before 18,344 fans at St. Louis' Scottrade Center.
After dropping a 6-0 decision in Friday morning's championship quarterfinal round to Minnesota's No. 2 seed Brett Pfarr, Beazley rebounded in the All-American round, scoring two first period takedowns to cling to a 7-6 victory over the Hawkeye to earn All-American status for the first time in his career.
Beazley wrestled again shortly after the milestone victory, where he was defeated by Oklahoma State's No. 6 seed Preston Weigel, 15-3.
Fifth-year senior Jack Dechow dropped back-to-back heartbreakers against two defending NCAA Champions Friday, falling one win shy of claiming All-American honors for the second time in his illustrious career as a Monarch.
In Friday morning's championship quarterfinals, Dechow fell to two-time NCAA Champion and top-seeded Gabe Dean from Cornell, 4-3 TB. Dechow surrendered a takedown in the second period but scored a reversal to tie the bout, 2-2. After the pair traded escapes in the third period and neither scored in sudden victory overtime, Dean clung to a leg in a late scramble to narrowly hold on to the 4-3 win in the tiebreakers.
Friday evening, Dechow and defending NCAA Champion Myles Martin from Ohio State battled to a 2-2 draw through regulation. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Martin clung to Dechow in the second set of tiebreakers in nearly identical fashion to Dechow's setback against Dean.
Dechow finishes his career as a Monarch as a four-time NCAA qualifier, three-time MAC Champion and 2014 NCAA All-American. The Richmond, Illinois native also wraps up his career in 11th place on the all-time wins list at Old Dominion with a career record of 110-19.
All-American Kevin Beazley will wrestle tomorrow morning for seventh place against Rider's No. 8 seed Ryan Wolfe.
As a team, the Monarchs head into the final day of the 2017 NCAA DI Wrestling Championships in a tie for 25th place with App State with 13.5 team points.
