Five Grappling Monarchs Honored On 2017 VaSID All-State Teams
By ODU Athletics
FERRUM, Va. – Five Old Dominion wrestlers were named to the 2017 Virginia Sport Information Director (VaSID) All-State team following the 2016-17 season.
Wright, a sophomore from Chesapeake, Va., made his first NCAA Championship appearance at 165 pounds this season following a 20-10 regular season record. He finished fourth at the 2017 MAC Championships, just one win shy of an automatic bid to the national tournament. The first-team All-State laurel is the first for the Monarch grappler in his collegiate career.
NCAA qualifier Alex Madrigal (133 lbs.) earned a spot on the second-team All-State, the first of his career as a Monarch. He finished fifth at the MAC tournament and entered the 2017 NCAA Championship with a 12-12 record.
Freshman Kevin Budock was the youngest representative of the ODU wrestling squad to earn a place on the second-team All-State. Budock also finished fifth at the MAC Tournament wrapping up his true-freshman season with a 21-15 record at 141 pounds.
Jack Dechow, who earned second-team status, made his third appearance on the VaSID All-State teams. The senior grappler was a first-teamer in 2014 and on the second-team in 2015. Dechow finished the 2016-17 season falling one win shy of claiming All-American honors after dropping back-to-back matches against two defending NCAA Champions at 184 pounds.
Wrapping up the All-State team honorees is All-American Kevin Beazley. He narrowly escaped with the win as he earned a 7-6 decision over Iowa's Cash Wilcke in the "blood round" to secure his first All-American finish at the 2017 NCAA DI Wrestling Championships. Beazley is a two-time VaSID All-State honoree making his first appearance on the second-team in 2015.
ODU wrestling is back in action on June 1-4 as they head to Akron, Ohio, for the UWW Cadet & University Nationals hosted by the University of Akron.
