New York, N.Y. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Big East Conference announced that the Old Dominion women’s lacrosse team will join the league starting in 2019. The Lady Monarchs have been playing as an affiliate member of the Atlantic Sun conference since 2015, winning the conference title and first-time NCAA birth in 2016. ODU will continue to compete under the A-SUN for the 2017-2018 season.

“We are very excited to move forward and into the Big East next year. We are grateful for our time in the Atlantic Sun, and are ready to start a new chapter in ODU lacrosse history,” said ODU head coach Heather Holt. “The Big East is going to be very challenging and I’m excited for our team to rise up and accept the challenge.”

Currently in the Big East, Butler, Cincinnati, Denver, Florida, Georgetown, Marquette, Temple, Connecticut, Vanderbilt, and Villanova. While Old Dominion enters in 2019, Cincinnati, Florida, Temple, Vanderbilt, and Connecticut will be transitioning from the Big East to the American Athletic Conference to join East Carolina in 2019.

The 2019 Big East league will consist of Old Dominion, Butler, Denver, Georgetown, Marquette, and Villanova.

Along with the Big East and the AAC, the A-SUN and So-Con have shifted their members as well. The new lineup change makes it possible to have six-team leagues.

The ODU women’s field hockey team has been an affiliate member of the Big East since 2013.

The Big East was founded in 1979 and women’s lacrosse was introduced 16 years ago. Known for its basketball-focused culture, the Big East emphasizes all-around academic and athletic success. Big East women’s lacrosse has had success in the NCAA tournament, which includes seven teams advancing to the final four.
