NORFOLK, Va. – Brandon Perdue and Max Wilschrey’s goals lifted the Old Dominion men’s soccer team (1-0-0) over Appalachian State (0-1-0) by a 2-1 score in the 2017 regular season opener for both teams on Friday night at the ODU Soccer Complex.

In the 20th minute, Appalachian State’s Juan Hernandez was booked for a red card, which resulted in the Mountaineers playing a man down for the remainder of the contest.

Despite outshooting Appalachian State 11-1 in the opening 45 minutes, the score remained tied, 0-0, at halftime. The Monarchs also held a 4-1 advantage for corner kicks in the first half.

In the 47th minute, ODU’s Hans Kroschwitz played a ball into the box, which found Brandon Perdue, who put the ball in the back of the Mountaineers net to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.

Just 53 seconds later, App State tied the match back up at 1-1 off a Reed Hunnicutt free kick, which Michael Davidson finished in the 48th minute.

It was Old Dominion’s Max Wilschrey who scored the game-winner in the 84th minute off a Brandon Perdue assist to ultimately propel the Monarchs to a 2-1 victory on Friday night in front of 227 fans in Norfolk, Va.

For the match, ODU dominated the shot count (22-5) and held a 6-3 advantage for corner kicks.
