NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion (7-8, 3-2 MAC) wrestling team fell to No. 16 Central Michigan (7-4, 4-1 MAC), 23-13 on Sunday afternoon in their final home dual. The Monarchs won four matches but dropped the last five en route to their second MAC loss.

“All MAC teams are tough, especially No. 16 Central Michigan. Besides Missouri, this is a team we really try to get after in the conference. I thought we started off strong. With Central Michigan, they’re good at all three positions, that’s what makes every match so tight,” explained head coach Steve Martin. “Overall, I thought all of our guys fought hard for seven minutes and that’s all we’re looking for at this time of the year. This will get us ready for the national tournament, which is the goal at the end of the year.”

Starting at 125 pounds, Michael McGee earned his second straight win with a 3-2 decision over Drew Hildebrandt.

At 133, Caleb Richardson picked up a win by decision over Dresden Simon to extend the Monarch lead. Richardson earned his first win since January 13 against Chattanooga.

#9 Mason Smith of Central Michigan pinned Mason Wohltman at 141.

Bumping up a weight class, #17 Alex Madrigal beat Nolan Saxton by decision.

Earning bonus points for the Monarchs, Larry Early defeat Blake Montrie by major decision to give ODU a 13-6 lead heading into the 165-pound bout.

At 165, Logan Parks topped Luke Drugac by decision.

In a close bout, #15 CJ Brucki defeated #19 Seldon Wright by an 4-1 decision.

At 184, #14 Jordan Ellingwood earned a major decision over Antonio Agee to give the Chips their first lead of the match.

Earning bonus points for Central Michigan, Jordan Atienza won by major decision over Noah Bushman.

In the final bout, #15 Matt Stencel earned a decision win over Ali Wahab at heavyweight.

“What we’re trying to emphasize to our kids is one thing, we want to see you fight and compete for seven minutes and have some fun at the end of the year. If you compete for seven minutes, you can be in the match with anybody." said Martin. "Our philosophy is if you want to be the best you have to beat the best. We’re excited because we’re going to wrestle nationally ranked guys in Kent and Ohio. At the end of the day, it’s about competing up to your ability level.”
