NORFOLK, Va. - Over the weekend, Alexander Richardson and Jack Dechow of the Old Dominion University wrestling team attained All-American status at the 2013 ASICS University Nationals. Action took place in the Louis and Freda Stile Athletic Field House at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Richardson placed fifth in the 70 kg Freestyle Tournament, while Dechow placed seventh in the 84 kg Freestyle Tournament.

Head coach Steve Martin said, "In a field full of NCAA National Qualifiers, All-Americans and National Champions, our group garnered great experience at this year's event. This invaluable experience will continue to help our guys improve and reach their goals on the mat."

Alexander Richardson (70 kg) went 5-2 overall in the 65-person field for the weekend on his way to a fifth place finish and All-American standing. Richardson cruised through his first four matches, before falling in the semifinal of the winner's bracket to eventual champion, Justin DeAngelis. In the fifth place match, Richardson pinned Pat Smith at the 3:23 mark.

Martin on Richardson's performance, "Alexander continues to make our coaching staff very proud. This was the first freestyle tournament that Richardson has competed in since elementary school. He was able to use his athleticism, technique and toughness to get on the podium."

Jack Dechow (84 kg) went 4-2 overall in the 56-person field for the weekend, on his way to a seventh place finish and All-American standing. Dechow won his first two matches before falling in the quarterfinals of the winner's bracket to two-time NCAA qualifier, Max Thomusseit. Dechow was later victorious in the seventh place match.

Martin on Dechow, "Jack had a great tournament and continues to constantly improve. In the last minute of the quarterfinal bout, Jack was able to narrow the gap against Max Thomusseit, and was in a scoring position with an opportunity to win the match." Martin continued, "I expect both Richardson and Dechow to contend for NCAA titles."
