NORFOLK, Va. - Chris Mecate and Alexander Richardson of the Old Dominion University wrestling team have been named to the 2013 Amateur Wrestling News (AWN) All-Rookie Team. AWN compiles their All-Rookie Team by selecting six freshmen from each of the 10 collegiate weight classes. Mecate was the No. 2 ranked rookie by AWN at 141 pounds; Richardson was the No. 5 ranked rookie by AWN at 149 pounds.

Mecate, a 2013 NCAA qualifier, finished the season with a 37-9 overall record and went 7-0 in CAA action. During this past season, the redshirt freshman from Highland, Calif. went on a 12-match win streak, extending from January 11th to March 21st.

Mecate placed fourth at the prestigious Southern Scuffle and was crowned the champ at both the Clarion and the Mat Town Opens. Mecate won the CAA title with a 7-1 victory over NCAA qualifier Frank Cimato of Drexel. Mecate qualified for the NCAA Championships as the 12th-seeded wrestler at 141 pounds and won his opening round match with a 6-3 decision over Brandon Nelsen of Purdue.

Throughout this past season, Mecate accumulated three CAA Rookie of the Week awards before being named the 2013 CAA Rookie of the Year. Mecate became just the third ODU wrestler to win the award and first since 2008. He was also named to the NWCA Division I All-Academic Team.

Richardson, a true freshman from Jersey City, N.J., qualified for his first NCAA tournament after earning one of two CAA automatic qualifying bids within the 149 pound weight-class. Richardson finished his freshman campaign with a 29-15 overall mark and went 6-2 against CAA opponents. Richardson defeated three NCAA qualifiers throughout this past season.

At the end of May, Richardson attained All-American status at the 2013 ASICS University Nationals in Akron, Ohio. Richardson went 5-2 overall in a 65-person field on his way to a fifth place finish and All-American standing.

Alex Dieringer (157) of Oklahoma State was named the 2013 AWN Rookie of the Year.
