VA Duals Brackets Released- ODU is a 7-seed

HAMPTON, Va. - The Old Dominion University wrestling team will be competing in the 34th Annual Virginia Duals Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 10-11 at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia.

The Virginia Duals committee ranks eight out of the 14 teams for the college tournament. This year, ODU received the seventh seed and face Lock Haven in their first match at 11 a.m. on Friday. ODU will then face either No. 15 Edinboro or the loser of Group C on Friday afternoon.

The competition is a dual team advancement system, which began in Hampton, Va. in 1981.  

ODU has competed in the Virginia Duals 27 times; the most appearances out of any college. Last season the Monarchs finished in eighth place as a team. It was in 1984, Old Dominion finished tied for third place, which was the best finish in school history. Following the 1984 VA Duals, ODU climbed as high as No. 14, which is the highest ranking in team history. Since 2007, ODU has four top-5 finishes at the Virginia Duals.

Arizona State, No. 22 Bloomsburg, Bucknell, Chattanooga, No. 15 Edinboro, George Mason, Kent State, Lock Haven, Nebraska-Kearney, Old Dominion, No. 25 Rider, The Citadel, No. 13 Virginia, No. 14 Virginia Tech are participating at this year’s Virginia Duals.

Recent Success

The Monarchs finished 10th as a team in the 2014 Southern Scuffle.  Redshirt sophomore Chris Mecate finished third, Brandon Jeske finished fifth, Alexander Richardson finished seventh and Kevin Beazley made the round of 12 at the Southern Scuffle. At 141 pounds, Mecate is ranked No. 4 by Amateur Wrestling News, has won eight of his last nine matches and is 16-4 overall. Redshirt junior Tristan Warner (157) is ranked No. 18 by AWN and is 10-5 overall this season. Redshirt freshman Beazley leads ODU with five falls and defeated an NCAA All-American Taylor Meeks (Oregon State) at the Scuffle. True freshman Jeske is 12-7 this season, ranked No. 20 by AWN and has won seven of his last nine matches.

The 2014 Virginia Duals consists of six tournaments, which include over 122 dual meets and 1660 bouts in order to determine the six championship teams and six Outstanding Wrestler Awards.
