NORFOLK, Va. - ODU wrestler Chris Mecate (141) was named the Mid-American Conference wrestler of the week for his third place finish at the Southern Scuffle.
Mecate placed third last week at the 2014 Southern Scuffle and defeated two All-Americans in the process. Last season Mecate finished fourth at the Scuffle and was able to improve his place this year.
Additional Nominees to Mecate were Andrew Morse (Northern Illinois), Dylan Peters (Northern Iowa) and Jeremy Johnson (Ohio).

Chris Mecate, Old Dominion—Sophomore, Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Old Dominion sophomore Chris Mecate finished off a 6-1 week by placing third in the 2014 Southern Scuffle. No. 8-ranked Mecate defeated two All-Americans- No. 6 Evan Henderson (UNC) and No. 2 Chris Dardanes (Minnesota) to earn third. He also defeated Ohio's Noah Forrider by a major decision and Kent State's Tyler Small by a 7-3 decision. The 141-pounder is 16-4 on the season, 5-4 vs. the top-20 and leads the Monarchs in tech falls with three.
Andrew Morse, Northern Illinois—Sophomore, Alto, Mich. (Lowell High School)
Northern Illinois sophomore Andrew Morse put an exclamation point on Saturday's 33-15 victory over SIU Edwardsville with a pin of Logun Taylor in the first period. After building up an 8-0 lead against Taylor, the sophomore was able to stick his opponent at 2:47. So far this season, Morse has a team-high 17 wins on the year, including eight wins by major decision, pin or technical fall.
Dylan Peters, Northern Iowa—Redshirt Freshman, Denver, Iowa (Denver High School)
Northern Iowa redshirt freshman Dylan Peters has pinned all his dual opponents and leads the team with 13 falls this season. Two more pins will put him on the record board for top 10 most pins by a Panther in a single season. He earned his 13th fall against Mike Soria of Buffalo in 1 minute, 30 seconds. His fastest victory by fall this season is 19 seconds.
Peters was fourth at the Midlands Championships and fifth at the Cliff Keen Invitational in the 125-pound weight class. As a prep athlete, Peters was a three-time state champion and finished with a 195-1 record. Many of those victories came by fall. Peters also has earned one technical fall and two major decisions. Peters is ranked seventh in the nation by InterMat and leads the conference in the rankings at 125 pounds. He is 19-4 this season (and career) and is 2-0 in the MAC.
Jeremy Johnson, Ohio—Senior, Broadview Heights, Ohio (Brecksville High School)
Ohio senior Jeremy Johnson posted a pair of top five finishes over the past two weeks and posted a 9-1 mark during that stretch, while tallying a pair of falls. At the Reno Tournament of Champions, Johnson captured the heavyweight crown as he posted a perfect 5-0 record. He then followed that performance up with a 4-1 mark at the Southern Scuffle to finish fourth. With his nine wins over the past two weeks, Johnson improved to 21-3 on the year.
