NORFOLK, Va. - ODU redshirt freshman wrestler Jack Dechow was named an additional nominee to the MAC Wrestler of the Week for his performance last week.
Dechow defeated No. 19-ranked Jonathan Fausey of Virginia by a 3-1 decision. Old Dominion's 184-pounder is ranked in both the WrestlingReport and D1 College Wrestling polls. Dechow is 8-3 this season and is 4-2 against the nationally ranked top-20.
Central Michigan's Mike Ottinger was named MAC Wrestler of the Week, while Nick Flannery (Buffalo), Vincent Pizzuto (Eastern Michigan), Tyler Buckwalter (Kent State), Shaun'Qae McMurtry (Northern Illinois), Joey Lazor (Northern Iowa) and Jeremy Johnson (Ohio) joined Dechow on the additional nominee list.
MAC Wrestler of the Week
Mike Ottinger, Central Michigan—Junior, Schnecksville, Pa. (Parkland High School)
Central Michigan junior Mike Ottinger claimed a pair of wins over ranked opponents last week, displaying that he is the favorite to claim the 174 pound division in the MAC. Ottinger opened the week by defeating defending MAC champion and seventh-ranked Cody Walters of Ohio 2-1 and capped the week with a 4-3 decision over No. 17 Mikey England of Missouri. The wins improved Ottinger to 16-2 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in MAC competition, moving him into the top 10 in the both the InterMat and AWN polls.
Nick Flannery, Buffalo—Senior, Framingham, Mass. (Framingham High School)
Buffalo senior Nick Flannery was one of three Bulls to pick up a victory on Friday night at Columbia as he defeated #17 Matt Bystol by the score of 6-3. This is the first victory of the season for Flannery over a ranked opponent. Flannery dominated most of the match as he earned two takedowns and an escape. He also earned the riding time point as he earned two minutes of riding time for the match. Flannery improved to 13-11 overall and 4-8 in dual action.
Vincent Pizzuto, Eastern Michigan—Sophomore, North Jackson, Ohio (Jackson High School)
Eastern Michigan sophomore Vincent Pizzuto picked up two individual MAC victories over Northern Illinois and Ohio. The North Jackson, Ohio native brought the Eagles within three as he secured a 14-8 decision over Nick Smith of Northern Illinois. Pizzuto took the 7-3 lead through the first period and did not let up through the final two, as he was able to nab the victory for the Green and White at 133 lbs. Against Ohio, Pizzuto brought Eastern Michigan within six of the Bobcats with one bout left to wrestle when he grabbed the narrow 3-2 decision over Kagen Squire. Pizzuto had won three straight matches for the Eagles and is 3-0 in MAC competition.
Tyler Buckwalter, Kent State—Junior, Mill Hall, Pa.
Kent State junior Tyler Buckwalter earned a key 9-1 major decision in Kent State’s 23-14 victory over North Carolina State on Sunday. He jumped out to a 5-0 first period lead against the Wolfpack’s Peter Santos and a takedown with 10 seconds left in the match clinched bonus points for the Golden Flashes. Despite having two starters out of the lineup, Kent State never trailed in the dual, dropping NC State to 10-3 on the year. Buckwalter improved to 4-0 in home duals this season.
Shaun’Qae McMurtry, Northern Illinois—Redshirt Freshman, Lockport, Ill. (Lockport High School)
Northern Illinois redshirt freshman Shaun’Qae McMurtry went 2-0 over the weekend in Michigan and Ohio. Friday night at Eastern Michigan, McMurtry scored a 9-5 decision against Dean Vettese to stop the Eagle comeback en route to a 24-9 Huskie victory. Two days later at the Wendy's Duals in Ashland, Ohio, McMurtry notched a 6-2 win against Purdue's Chad Welch, putting NIU within 13-9 against the 22nd-ranked Boilermakers.
Joey Lazor, Northern Iowa—Senior, McDonough, Ga.
Northern Iowa senior Joey Lazor earned his 75th career win over No. 10 Nick Lester of Oklahoma with his fastest fall of the season. Lester is a two-time NCAA Division I national qualifier and an All-American. Lazor pinned him in 2:06, helping the Panthers beat their first top 10 opponent since 2004. Lazor was one round from earning All-American status at last year’s national championships. He is undefeated in duals (5-0) and is 2-0 in MAC duals. He is 9-3 overall. He is majoring in elementary education.
Jeremy Johnson, Ohio—Senior, Broadview Heights, Ohio (Brecksville High School)
Ohio senior Jeremy Johnson posted a perfect 2-0 record this past week and helped Ohio to a 1-1 team record. Johnson won by a fall against Central Michigan's Adam Robinson and Eastern Michigan's Khodor Hoballah. With the two falls, Johnson captured his team-best 23rd and 24th victories on the year. He has also tallied a fall in each of his last three bouts. Johnson has registered eight falls during the 2013-14 campaign.

Old Dominion redshirt freshman Jack Dechow completed an undefeated week by defeating No. 19-ranked Jonathan Fausey of Virginia. Dechow managed to score the first point by an escape and scored the only takedown to win by a 3-1 decision. Dechow is 8-3 this season and has won three of his four matches since his return from injury. Dechow is 4-2 against the nationally ranked top-20 this season.
