Monarch Grapplers Take Down American, 33-13

WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 13)-- Old Dominion's wrestling team scored a 33-13 victory over CAA-foe American today to run their season record to 3-4, while moving to 2-1 in the CAA. Monarch sophomore Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA), ranked #14 in the country at 165, earned a 3-2 decision over 20th-ranked Denis Alampiev to run his career dual meet record to 24-0.

Rusak's win put the Monarchs up 3-0 in the early going. At 174, sophomore George Sable (Middle Island, NY) earned a default victory over Stacey Woodhouse to put ODU up, 9-0.

American came back with a fall at 184 and a major decision at 197 to move ahead, 10-9. But at heavyweight, ODU's Leevi MacDonald (Virginia Beach, VA) won by forfeit and at 125, Chip Reyes (Virginia Beach, VA) topped Willie Harris, 3-1, to move the Monarchs back in front, 18-10.

At 133, senior Joel Jimenez (Norfolk, VA) decisioned Peter Tarricone, 8-6, while Dennis Whitby (Lanoka Harbor, NJ) and Jake Cairns (Brick, NJ) recorded back-to-back pins at 149 and 157 to close out the win for Old Dominion.

The Monarchs return home on Saturday (Feb. 19) as they host a quad-meet with Howard, Delaware State and Maryland at 10 am.
