FAIRFAX, VA -- Old Dominion University went 1-1 on day one of the CAA Duals Friday while dropping a 12-24 decision to No. 6 Hofstra and defeating Drexel 20-15. The Monarchs battled against Hofstra winning three weight classes and losing by decision in five of the bouts. ODU bounced back in the 8:00 dual when Kyle Hutter and David Mendoza defeated nationally ranked opponents en route to a victory that would run ODU's record to 7-4, 2-1.
Day two of the Conference Duals won't be easy for the Monarchs as they start the day against the Colonial's second-ranked team, Rider University, at 11:00 am. The two teams matched up at the Virginia Duals last weekend and ODU earned a 19-18 victory. At 1:00 pm ODU will matchup against Boston University and at 3:00 pm the team will face Sacred Heart University.
Round One: No. 6 Hofstra def. Old Dominion, 24-12
The ODU grapplers were across the mat from a nationally ranked opponent in six of the ten weight classes on Friday evening. The Pride of Hofstra start eight ranked grapplers but chose to rest the 149- and 165-lb. ranked grapplers.
After a technical fall over Kyle Hutter in the first bout, Christian Staylor battled against Hofstra rookie sensation Lou Ruggirello, but finished one point short in a 3-4 decision. Ryan Williams at 141-lbs. could not topple Charles Griffin and the Monarchs were in an early 0-11 hole.
Kaylen Baxter earned the first of three ODU victories when he won 4-2 over Hofstra's John Manarte. The momentum was short-lived, however, as the Pride's top-ranked wrestler, James Strouse, earned a major decision over Chris Brown at 157-lbs. Strouse is the second best 157-pounder in the country according to InterMat.
Nick Pullano would enter the ring to raise his hand at 165-lbs. as the Pride forfeited to cut the lead to six, 9-15. The Monarchs would then suffer three straight decisions in the 174-, 184-, and 197-lb. weight classes to seal the victory for Hofstra.
Matt Pellar would earn a 3-1 decision over Matt Pollock in the heavyweight division for the final score of 12-24.

Round Two: Old Dominion def. Drexel, 20-15
The Monarchs bounced back against Drexel on Friday night with a 20-15 victory over the third ranked team in the CAA. The Monarchs and Dragons are tied for the third slot in the CAA but ODU proved to be the better team at the CAA Duals.
Old Dominion jumped to an 11-0 lead in the first three weight classes behind a 5-3 decision for Kyle Hutter over wrestlingreport.com's 26th best 125-lb. weight class. Christian Staylor and Ryan Williams both tallied major decisions in the next two bouts to give ODU the early lead.
However, Mark Cartella defeated Kaylen Baxter in a 5-2 decision at 149, and the nationally ranked 157-lb. Dragon Ryan Hluschak pinned Chris Brown with 18 seconds remaining in the bout. With the two wins, the Dragons pulled within two, 11-9.
The hottest dual competitor for the Monarchs turned it back around for ODU in the 165-lb. weight class when Nick Pullano earned a 3-0 decision over Billy Haydt. It was Pullano's tenth victory in ten dual meets this season.
Nationally ranked Nick Kozar closed the gap to two again when he earned a 1-4 decision over Derek Coffey. With the team score at 14-12 in favor of the Monarchs the upper weights would have a chance to put away the dual.
Jesse Strawn won his bout at 184 over Justin Terhune 7-2 and gave ODU a five-point lead. It was David Mendoza, though, that would seal the victory for ODU. He was matched up against the grappler that just this week replaced him at 20th in the USA Today/Intermat national rankings, Jon Oplinger. The two would battle but Mendoza came away with a 4-3 decision to give the Monarchs an insurmountable 20-12 lead.
Matt Pellar would drop the heavyweight class in a decision for the final score of 20-15.
