INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The ODU Monarchs kicked off the 2006-07 season this weekend with a dual match against Purdue University. In a back-and-forth match, ODU held a lead only a fall could beat going into the final bout. Unfortunately for the Monarchs, Purdue senior Nathan Moore brought down Jesse Strawn to earn that fatal fall with just 16 seconds remaining in the first period.

The final count was Purdue 18 to ODU's 17 points. David Mendoza started the meet for the Monarchs with a 3-2 advantage over Purdue's heavyweight, Chris Kasten. However, Kasten battled back for a 6-4 win and the lead. Ranked 18th in the nation at 125 Christian Staylor stepped up and won his bout 4-1 against junior Brandon Tucker.

Freshman Adam Koballa avoided a major decision by fighting back in the late rounds against Purdue wrestler Cameron Doggett in the 133-pound match. Doggett finished off Koballa 13-6 giving Purdue the edge again.

Coach Steve Martin then called on his only returning NCAA qualifier from a year ago, Ryan Williams. Williams earned a bid to the tournament at 133 last season and will wrestle in the 141 slot this year. He earned an 11-6 victory over senior Jason Cook that tied the meet at 6-6.

The meet would go back in favor of Purdue in the 149-pound bout as red-shirt freshman Kaylen Baxter showed a lot of heart in a tough 7-6 loss to sophomore Jake Patascil. Baxter had a last-second takedown in the first period that put him ahead of Patascil, but Patascil tied it back up near the end of the second with a 3-point nearfall. At the end of the bout the score remained 6-6, but Patascil earned the riding-time point to take the victory. The thriller gave Purdue a 9-6 edge in the meet.

The 157-pound bout was another thriller ending more favorably for the Monarchs in a 7-5 overtime victory for Chris Brown. Brown has looked very good in the pre-season and now in the first dual of the season including a 20-4 major decision over teammate Jeff Jacobs in intersquad competition and on Friday a big victory in overtime over Purdue freshman Eric Howe.

Nick Pullano put together the biggest bout of the day for the Monarchs with a 20-5 technical fall over Purdue freshman Jason Martin. The Monarchs were seemingly in control after Brown and Pullano's bouts going up by five. Nick Corpe cut into the lead for Purdue in the 174-pound bout defeating Bryan Koz. Koz went down 6-5 after suffering 3 takedowns. Derek Coffey then put the lead back to five by defeating Aaron Goebel in the 184-pound match.

Strawn's match proved important, however, as he only was able to capture three team points. The three points gave ODU a five-point lead going into the final bout of the day, featuring ODU's Jesse Strawn and nationally ranked Purdue senior Nathan Moore. For Purdue, it was storybook, with the senior wrestling in his high school gym with only one chance to earn victory for his Boilermaker team, a pinfall. Two minutes and forty-four seconds later, Strawn was unable to escape and Purdue claimed victory.

The Monarchs are also in action this weekend at the Michigan State Open on Sunday. The team will return to the mat at Ithaca, New York next Saturday at the Cornell Body Bar.
