Monarchs Recruit Two Nationally Ranked Wrestlers
Nov. 16, 2006
NORFOLK, VA -- The 2006-07 schedule is just underway and head coach Steve Martin is already hard at work improving his squad for next season. Two letters of intent have been sent to ODU from nationally ranked high school grapplers Gary Frazier and Roy Dragon III.
Frazier will join the Monarchs from Shawnee High School in Shawnee, Oklahoma and chose ODU over perennial powerhouses Oklahoma and Nebraska. A proven champion, Frazier, ranked 25th in the nation by Wrestling USA, has earned seven state titles at Shawnee in football (1), wrestling (2), and track (4). He won a state title in football in 2003; in track, he is state champion in the 4 X 800 relay twice, the high jump, and the 110m hurdles. With a career 102-8 record Frazier won state titles in 2003 and 2005. Frazier will most likely wrestle in the 197-pound weight class.
"Both Roy and Gary help solidify some of our needs in the upper weights. We will be looking for big contributions from both of these young men as we look to continue to build toward a championship program," said Coach Martin.
With Frazier satisfying the need at 197, Dragon will step in at the heavyweight slot. Dragon has a 107-10 career record with 77 career falls. He is a top seven finisher in the New Jersey state championship twice including a third place finish last season as a junior. The Bridgewater-Raritan High School wrestler is ranked 11th in the nation by InterMat and 12th in the nation by W.I.N. Magazine. With a 3.45 GPA the New Jersey native comes to ODU a member of the National Honors Society and Student Council.
