March 22, 2013
DES MOINES, Iowa - Friday marked Day Two of the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Arena is Des Moines, Iowa. 141-pound redshirt freshman, Chris Mecate was the only wrestler that saw action today.
Mecate advanced to action today after winning his opening round match (6-3) against Brandon Nelsen of Purdue.
Today, Mecate faced Michael Nevinger of Cornell in the Second Round of the Wrestlebacks. Nevinger is a two-time NCAA qualifier and became an All-American last year after knocking off three seeded wrestlers.
Nevinger and Mecate appeared to be very even as the first period came and went with no scoring from either wrestler. In the second period, Nevinger won the coin-flip and deferred to Mecate; the Monarch took the bottom position and struggled for about a minute to escape. Nevinger and Mecate eventually went out of bounds. The two wrestlers then met back in the middle of the mat, where Nevinger would pin Mecate about 15 seconds later.
This was the last season that Old Dominion Wrestling was a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, as they went a perfect 6-0 against conference competition this year. The Wrestling Monarchs will join the Mid American Conference next season. ODU has qualified a total of 11 wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in just two seasons.
