Recruiting Class Ranks Tenth Nationally By

NORFOLK, VA-- announced Old Dominion University's wrestling recruiting class ranks among the nation's elite for the second consecutive year. Heading this solid tenth-ranked class for the 2006-07 season of head coach Steve Martin and his staff are five nationally ranked wrestlers: James Nicholson(IA), Billy Chamberlain (PA.), Kyle Hutter (IL.), Jesse Strawn (KS.) and Matt Edmondson (GA.) along with junior college national champion Matt Collum from Iowa Central.

ODU is the only CAA team in the top 30, and joins Lehigh, Oklahoma State and Penn State as the only programs to have signed atleast five nationally ranked wrestlers by InterMat.

Collum, a transfer from Iowa Central Community College was the 2005 Junior College National Champion and in high school was a 2004 NHSCA High School National Champion. Collum is expected to wrestle at 157 for the Monarchs.

James Nicholson went undefeated his senior year (42-0) and won the Iowa State Championship at 119 pounds. He has been awarded several honors including being a two-time state Greco State Champion and a two-time Brute Adidas All-American. Nicholson compiled a 132-19 career record and earned first team academic all-state honors, and was awarded an academic scholarship from ODU. He was Roosevelt High School's Man of the Year.

Billy Chamberlain (125) was the Pennsylvania state champion and compiled a 110-21 career record. Chamberlain was the MAWA Eastern Nationals Champion as well as Junior Greco, USA Wrestling, Brute Adidas and FILA Junior Greco All-American.

Kyle Hutter (133), another academic scholarship recipient is a two-time Illinois State place winner. Hutter took third in the state championships as a senior and fourth as a junior. He completed his career at 165-27. He was a 2005 Junior National All-American in freestyle and placed third at the FILA Cadets.

Jess Strawn (184-197), a native of Holton, Kansas is a two-time Kansas State runner up and won the state title as a junior at 189 pounds. He has a career record of 113-4 with 90 of those decisions by falls.

Mike Edmondson (197), from Adel High School (GA.). boasts a career record of 124-17 and has pinned 112 Of his opponents. He is the 2004 Cadet Freestyle All-American and 2005 NHSCA Junior National All-American. He is a three-time state place winner, capturing the Georgia State Championship as a junior at 189 pounds.

Adding to this outstanding recruiting class are: Daniel Rivera (157-165) from Winter Springs, FL, Adam Koballa (125) from Bedford, Ohio, who signed in November along with Derek Coffey 174-(PA.), Steve Kocevar (HWGT) from Chesapeake, VA, a transfer from Slippery Rock and former Western Branch standout, and Joey Metzler (141) from Turner Ashby HS (Bridgewater, VA.).

Last season, ODU captured the Virginia Intercollegiate State Championship and placed second in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships.
