Monarch Wrestling Topples JMU 40-9

NORFOLK, VA -The Old Dominion wrestling team toppled James Madison University 40-9 Sunday afternoon at the ODU Field House. The Monarchs recorded four pins, one tech fall and two major decisions during the dual. ODU improves to 11-5 overall for the season, and 6-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while JMU falls to 3-14 and 2-6 in the CAA.
The Monarchs took a 21-0 lead, after pins by Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA/141) and Hunter Davenport (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/149), a major decision by Nick Pullano (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/157) and a tech fall by Robby Gosnell (Warrenton, VA/165). JMU got on the board when Brian Lambert earned a 11-5 decision over John Adams (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek/174), but Adam Wright (Dayton, VA/184) earned a 12-2 major decision over JMU's Zach Winfrey and Shea Smith (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood/197) earned took a 7-3 decision over Zach Winfrey to give ODU the 28-3 lead.
Chris Cvitan pinned John Dolida (Bridgewater, NJ/Hwt.) to make the score 28-9, but two quick pins by #15 Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/125) and B.J. Compton (Christiansburg, VA/133) gave the Monarchs a 40-9 victory over the Dukes.
The Monarchs will be back in action next Sunday, February 20, when they host George Mason at 5:00 for their last dual of the season. The ODU coaching staff and wrestlers will conduct a free clinic from 3:00 to 4:30 in the ODU Field House prior to the match.
