Wrestling to Compete at Southern Scuffle and Midlands Over Break

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Old Dominion University wrestling will compete in the Southern Scuffle and Midlands Invitational over Christmas break on Dec. 29-30. The Southern Scuffle will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum while the Midlands is held at Northwestern University.

Seniors James Nicholson and Kyle Hutter will make the trip to the Midwest to compete at the Midlands. The fourth ranked Nicholson (125-pounds) will compete against No. 1 Matt McDonough of Iowa and No. 2 Brandon Precin of Northwestern while four other wrestlers ranked in the top-20 will be competing. Nicholson will be the No. 3 seed in the bracket.

Hutter will wrestle at 133-pounds and is ranked No. 8 by TheOpenMat.com and No. 11 by Intermat. Five other wrestlers in the top-10 will be in the bracket, led by No. 3 Tyler Graff of Wisconsin. In total, there are eight ranked wrestlers in the bracket. Hutter will be the No. 5 seed in the bracket.

The rest of the squad will compete in the Southern Scuffle. A tough tournament in its own right, the tournament will feature seven teams ranked in the top-25, including No. 1 Cornell, No. 4 Minnesota and No. 7 Penn State. Every weight class in the tournament has at least four ranked wrestlers, with four weight classes featuring the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country.

Brennan Brumley will take a 10-5 mark into a loaded 141-pound bracket, featuring 10 ranked wrestlers. Brumley has defeated one ranked opponent on the year and has two losses by a combined three points to top-15 wrestlers.

Senior Joey Metzler has also put up tough matches against top competition. He will once again get another opportunity as the 149-pound bracket has six ranked wrestlers.

Overall, the 125 and 141 pound weigh classes have the most ranked wrestlers with 10 each, while 197 has nine and 174 and 184 have eight apiece.

Tristan Warner is off to a solid start in his true freshman season wrestling at 174, posting a 10-6 record with one pin and one major decision. Junior Joe Budi (184) has put together an 8-6 mark while Dan Rivera (165) and Joey Metzler are 7-7 and 6-6, respectively.

Following the holiday tournaments, the Monarchs will compete in the 31st annual Virginia Duals on Jan. 7-8.
