Monarchs Knocked Out of Virginia Duals by Wyoming, 20-16

HAMPTON, Va. - Old Dominion jumped out to an early lead but it wasn't enough as the Monarchs fell to Wyoming 20-16 Saturday morning in the Virginia Duals. Both teams won five matches apiece but a pin for Wyoming at 157 helped sway the final score.

James Nicholson, ranked fourth in the nation, gave ODU an early lead with a 16-8 major decision over No. 19 Alan Cox at 125 pounds. Nicholson took down Cox 12 seconds in and turned it into a two-point nearfall. Nicholson turned another two-point nearfall before Cox was able to get a reversal to make the match a 7-2 score. Cox was able to tie the match at seven with a takedown and three-point nearfall at the end of the first period. Nicholson registered an escape to begin the second period for an 8-7 lead. He followed that with another takedown after a restart to up his lead to 10-7. Nicholson was able to grab a takedown 29 seconds into the third period to stretch his lead to 12-7. Nicholson was awarded a point for an illegal hold before allowing Cox to escape to make the score 13-8. Nicholson grabbed a final takedown and earned the riding time point to earn a tough 16-8 major decision over Cox to give ODU a 4-0 lead.

No. 12 Kyle Hutter added to ODU's lead with a 4-0 decision over Kasey Garnhart. Hutter delivered a takedown with 39 seconds left in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Hutter earned a point with an escape 10 seconds into the second period. Hutter was able to ride Garnhart for the entire third period to earn the riding time point for a 4-0 decision and increase ODU's lead to 7-0.

After a scoreless first period, Brennan Brumley gained an escape 21 seconds into the second period to take a 1-0 lead over Chase Smith. Smith escaped with five seconds left in the second period but Brumley had secured the riding time point to take a 2-1 decision and give the Monarchs a 10-0 team advantage.

No. 11 Cole Dallaserra got an early takedown to take a 2-0 lead at 149, but Scott Festejo followed with an escape. Dallaserra followed that takedown with two more to take a 6-2 lead after one period. Dallaserra kept attacking and earned a 14-3 major decision. The win for Wyoming cut ODU's lead to 10-4.

Chad Lowman earned a takedown a minute into the first period at 157, but in going for back points got his back turned and Jimmy Belleville took advantage to get the pin and tie the team score at 10.

No. 6 Shane Onufer earned a takedown 45 seconds into the first period against Dan Rivera at 165 pounds for an early 2-0 lead. Onufer earned a quick escape to begin the second period to stretch his lead to 3-0. Onufer added another takedown with 40 seconds remaining in the third period and added the riding time point for a 6-0 decision and give Wyoming its first lead of the match at 13-10.

Dallas Hintz earned a takedown a minute into the first period but Tristan Warner was able to earn a point when Hintz was called for an illegal hold. Hintz earned a two-point nearfall but Warner gained a two-point reversal to cut the lead to 4-3. Warner began the final period on the bottom and earned an escape with 43 seconds remaining but Hintz got a final takedown and riding time for a 7-4 win to give Wyoming a 16-10 team lead.

Joe LeBlanc, ranked No. 1 by theOpenMat.com, earned a takedown 30 seconds into the match for a 2-0 early lead with Joe Budi earning an escape with 43 seconds remaining in the period. LeBlanc was able to get another takedown and a two-point nearfall to take a 6-1 lead into the second period. Budi was able to earn an escape to begin the second period but LeBlanc got another takedown and two-point nearfall before the end of the period. LeBlanc put together another takedown and picked up a 14-2 major decision to give Wyoming a 20-10 lead.

Jake Henderson followed with an exciting overtime decision at 197 pounds. Lee Helbig escaped to begin the second period to gain the 1-0 lead. Henderson earned an escape as well 31 seconds into the third period to get the match into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Helbig earned an escape point to begin the second overtime but Henderson was able to escape and earn a takedown with one second remaining to grab a 4-2 victory.

Grant Chapman ended the match the same way it began for ODU, with a victory. The 285 pounder was down early as Joe O' Farrell got a takedown but Chapman got a reversal before the end of the period. Chapman was able to ride out Wyoming the entire second period to erase the riding time advantage. Chapman earned an escape just seven seconds into the third period and kept on the attack with a takedown to increase his lead to 5-2. O'Farrell got an escape to cut the lead to 5-3 but Chapman grabbed another takedown for a 7-3 advantage and he earned a riding time point for an 8-3 decision.
