AUBURN HILLS, MI -- Two of ODU's NCAA qualifiers were eliminated in the first day of wrestling at the national tournament, but Monarch senior Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA) will continue to wrestle in the consolation bracket. Nick Pullano (Chesapeake, VA) and David Mendoza (Wyomissing, PA) both fell in their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Staylor will wrestle Nick Gallick (Iowa State) Friday morning in the next round of the consolation bracket.
Staylor, the red-shirt senior for Old Dominion, advanced in the first round of the championship bracket with a 6-0 decision over West Virginia's Mark Anderson. He was slated for a rematch with (8) Tyler McCormick (Missouri), of whom he fell in a 1-0 decision earlier in the season.
Staylor jumped to a 2-0 lead before McCormick earned an escape and a takedown on the edge. At the beginning of the second period McCormick started down and Staylor nearly earned a nearfall before McCormick turned and reversed Staylor onto his back and earned the pin.
Bumped to the consolation bracket, Staylor faced Lehigh wrestler Seth Ciasuli. Staylor won easily, again, without allowing a point in all three periods. He earned the 5-0 decision with a takedown in both the first and third periods and over four minutes in riding time.
With the win, he advances to face Nick Gallick of Iowa State. Gallick was ranked as high as 14th in the nation this season including as late as March 1st. Currently ranked 19th, Staylor will have his work cut out for him against the Big 12 grappler.
As for the other two Monarchs, the first-timers were unable to score a win at the national tournament. Nick Pullano (165) had a tough draw as he had to face the number eight and number nine ranked 165-pounders in the nation. He was pinned in the third period by eighth ranked Matt Pell (Missouri) and again in the first period by the ninth, Steve Anceravage (Cornell).
David Mendoza (197) also drew a tough first bout, facing off against the seventh ranked grappler in the nation (7) Craig Brester (Nebraska). Brester won a major decision 15-2 over Mendoza forcing the Monarch into the consolation bracket.
The most dramatic bout for the Monarchs pit Mendoza over Arizona State's Jason Trulson. The Sun Devil earned the first point with an escape in the second period and then went up 3-0 with a takedown at the end of the period. Mendoza took down in the third and earned the escape point and needed a takedown to tie it up in the waning seconds. With no time left on the clock Mendoza was awarded the takedown to force it into overtime. In the first sudden victory, Trulson earned a takedown to win.
Wrestling for Staylor begins at 11:00 am Friday morning. Live updates of the action can be found at www.ncaasports.com.
