Monarchs Win Four Weight Classes Against Number Three Missouri
Feb. 14, 2007
COLUMBIA, MO -- Old Dominion traveled to Missouri to wrestle one of the top teams in the country on Wednesday. ODU lost 20-12, but took four bouts from the top tier program including Kaylen Baxter's 14-8 win over number ten 149-pounder Josh Wagner. ODU ends its 2007 dual season with a 12-7 record.
"Our guys competed hard. We wrestled with emotion," said head coach Steve Martin. "We wrestled a team that is in the hunt to win the National Title. When you have a young team competing against a team that good, often nerves take over and shut you down. Our guys went after them...this was big for a lot of our guys realizing they can compete with the best in the country."
ODU started out on top of Missouri as Kyle Hutter earned a big win at 125-lbs. The 7-6 decision gave the Monarchs a 3-0 lead while Hutter upset the 24th ranked, according to wrestlingreport.com, wrestler at 125-lbs.
In the 133-lb. weight class, the number five wrestler in the nation managed just one escape and the riding time point to win a decision over Christian Staylor. Staylor battled for a 2-1 loss to Tyler McCormick and the team score was tied at 3-3.
Sophomore Ryan Williams gave the Monarchs another three-point lead at 6-3 when he won a 9-3 decision over Marcus Hoehn. It was then that the 149-bout was on the mat and Kaylen Baxter won another big-time match.
Baxter, in his rookie campaign, has already beat top ranked wrestlers John Cox of Navy, Trevor Chinn of Lehigh, and Sam Alvarenga of VMI. This time he was slated against top ten wrestler Josh Wagner. Baxter totaled 14 points against the top-tier grappler and won a decision that would put Old Dominion up 9-3.
"Baxter had a huge win. He beat a stud. This was the 3rd time this season Kaylen has knocked off a guy in the top 10 in the country," said Martin.
The last win of the day would come from Derek Coffey. The Tigers wrestled the backup 174-pounder in John Andrews and Coffey didn't give up a point. The 6-0 decision would put the Monarchs up 12-3 with three bouts to wrestle.
That would be it for the Monarchs however, as Missouri used the number five nationally ranked 184-pounder to topple Jesse Strawn, 11-3, and the number two overall 197-pounder to beat David Mendoza, 4-2. Finally, in the heavyweight bout, Matt Pellar would drop a 10-0 major decision to Mark Ellis for the final score of 20-12.
The eight-point win was the slimmest margin of victory for the number three ranked team in the nation all season. ODU drops to 12-7 for the season as they head home to prepare for the CAA Tournament set for March 3-4.
