CAA Announces Preseason All-Freshman Team and Rankings

The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) announced the Preseason All-Freshman Team and the Preseason Rankings for the 2002-03 season at their annual fall meeting. ODU's Rob Gosnell (Warrenton, VA) at 157, Matt Ulrey (St. Mary's, MI) at 174, and Adam Wright (Bridgewater, VA) at 184 among those selected to the Preseason squad.
Gosnell was the Virginia State Champion at 160 lbs. last year and finished his career at Fauquier High School with a 117-27 record. Ulrey placed third in the Michigan State Championships as a senior after he took fourth as a sophomore. He also finished seventh in the Junior Nationals in Fargo, ND. Wright was a Va. State Champion as a senior after being the runner-up as a junior. He also won a state title in pole vaulting at Turner Ashby High School.
The Monarchs were picked to come in seventh in the CAA according to the coaches. The team has three wrestlers ranked in the conference with John Starkes (Chesapeake, VA) and Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) leading the way with #2 rankings at 125 and Heavyweight respectively. Dennis Whitby (Lanoke Harbor, NJ) rounds out the ranked Monarchs with a #3 showing at 149 lbs.
Hofstra, the defending conference champions, was chosen to win the conference again this year and also has a CAA best seven wrestlers ranked in the conference, including two ranked nationally.
Old Dominion will look to improve on their 6-9 record of a year ago when they begin the season on Saturday, November 23rd, when they host the Old Dominion Invitational.
