ODU Heads to No. 12 Central Michigan for Match on Sunday

NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University wrestling team will travel to Mt. Pleasant, Mich. for a showdown with the No. 12 Chippewas of Central Michigan from the Mid-American Conference at 1:00 p.m. (EST) in McGuirk Arena.

This match was originally scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.; however, has been moved-up an hour.

The Old Dominion Monarchs
The Monarchs are 10-5 overall, 5-0 in the CAA, 4-0 at home, 1-1 on the road and 5-4 in matches in neutral sites this season. ODU is currently on a five-match winning-streak; their last loss came on Jan. 13 at the Virginia Duals.

Sunday’s match will be a preview of soon-to-be conference opponents, as ODU-wrestling will join the Mid-American Conference next season as an affiliate member.

Old Dominion currently has six nationally ranked wrestlers within their respective weight classes:

Whose Hot?
-No. 30 Scott Festejo is on a six-match win-streak and was named the ‘CAA Wrestler of the Week’ for all competition on Jan. 22-28.
-No. 31 Alexander Richardson is on a six-match winning-streak as well.
-No. 13 Chris Mecate is currently on a five-match win-streak.

The Central Michigan Chippewas
Central Michigan is currently on a four-match winning-streak and has won nine out of their last 10 dual matches. The Chippewas are 11-3 in dual matches so far this season with wins over three nationally ranked teams. The Chippewas defeated No. 7 Missouri (17-16), No. 13 Michigan (21-16) and No. 16 Edinboro (25-10). 

With their 27-8 victory over rival Kent State last Sunday, Central Michigan earned its eighth MAC regular season title in 10 years and the 13th in program history. The 13 regular season titles are the most of any school in the MAC conference.

CMU is led by eight nationally ranked wrestlers.

Notes on the Chippewas’ Wrestlers
-Roth was a NCAA qualifier after winning the MAC Championships last year.
-Sentes is a three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time All-American.
-Mattingly was a NCAA qualifier last year.
-Corby is a two-time NCAA qualifier and was the MAC champion last year at 157-pounds.
-Last year, Ottinger became Central Michigan’s first true-freshman to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
-Bennett is only the fifth three-time All-American in the school’s history.
-Trice is a three-time NCAA qualifier and two-time All-American.


Last Meeting
No. 25 Old Dominion defeated No. 22 Central Michigan (18-17) on Feb. 5, 2012 in Norfolk, Va.
