Wrestling Begins Duals at Northern Iowa and Iowa State

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University wrestling heads north to Iowa this weekend to open its dual schedule by taking on Northern Iowa and Iowa State. The Monarchs take on Northern Iowa on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Iowa State on Sunday at 8 p.m.

The Monarchs have competed in the Hokie Open and Binghamton Open to begin the season and have featured a combined 11 place-winners between the two tournament.

James Nicholson began the season by winning the 125-pound weight class at the Hokie Open and is 5-0 on the year. Kyle Hutter has accounted for two second place finishes while Joe Budi has taken fourth place at both events.

Northern Iowa is 2-1 in duals meets this season with wins over McKendree and Wisconsin-Parkside. Their lone loss was to Northwestern. The Panthers have two wrestlers ranked among the top-20, Jarion Beets is No. 11 at 174 and Christian Brantley is No. 13 at 285.

Iowa State is 3-0 on the year with wins over Virginia Tech, Kent State and Boston University. The Cyclones have six wrestlers ranked, led by 174-pounder Jon Reader who is ranked seventh.

The Monarchs are back in action next weekend when they compete in the Hoosier Duals.
