FAIRFAX, VA  -The Old Dominion wrestling team went 2-1 during the second day of the CAA Duals, held at George Mason University, to finish 4-1 during the two day event. The Monarchs defeated Boston University 20-18 and Wagner College 55-0, and dropped a 17-16 dual to Drexel.

The Monarchs were down 18-6 to Boston University, but a 17-1 technical fall by Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/125) over Michael Galorenzo and a fall at the 3:37 mark by B.J. Compton (Christiansburg, VA/133) over Joe Whitaker closed the gap to just one point, 17-18. Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA/141) earned a 3-2 decision over Joseph Rivera, a NCAA qualifier last season, to give ODU the 20-18 win. This was ODU's first win over Boston University in three tries. Last year, BU defeated the Monarchs 34-9.

Against Drexel, the Monarchs were down 17-5, but a 14-3 major decision victory by Staylor over Dan Stewart, a 8-6 decision by Compton over Zach Makovsky and a 11-3 major decision by Shanon Slack over Bill Heverly pulled ODU within one point of Drexel.

ODU's 55-0 win over Wagner is the first shutout for the Monarchs since a 57-0 shutout against Delaware State last season at the ODU Field House.

During the tournament's first day, ODU earned its first win over Rider in the short four-year series. Last year, Rider won 39-6. Robby Gosnell (Warrenton, VA/165) defeated three wrestlers ranked higher than him in the CAA during the two day event.

ODU is back in action next Thursday, January 27, when they travel to Campbell for a 7:00 dual.
