Wrestling Falls Short at No. 10 American, 23-15

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Old Dominion University dropped its final non-conference match of 2010 at American, dropping a 23-15 exhibition match on Sunday in Washington D.C.

American took a 9-0 lead after two matches with No. 1 Steve Fittery opening the match with a 17-1 tech. fall over Chad Lowman and a 10-1 major decision by Patrick Graham over Dan Rivera.

ODU got on the board in the third match with an 11-4 decision by Tristan Warner. Warner got the first takedown of the match and opened the second period with a reversal to open up a lead and never looked back.

Old Dominion closed the gap to 9-6 with a 6-0 decision at 184 by Joe Budi over Phillip Barreiro. Budi never let Barreiro in the match, recording two takedowns, an escape and the riding time point.

The Eagles increased their lead to 17-6 with back-to-back major decisions by No. 19 Daniel Mitchell and No. 4 Ryan Flores.

Seniors James Nicholson and Kyle Hutter put the Monarchs back in the match with a major decision and technical fall. The fourth ranked Nicholson dominated in a 19-5 major decision over Thomas Williams while the 12th ranked Hutter took care of Kevin Tao with an 18-3 technical fall. The two wins brought the team score to 17-15 with two matches remaining.

Brennan Brumley and Matt Mariacher tangled in a close match, with each wrestler getting reversals on the other, in the end Mariacher took down Brumley in the third period to take a 6-4 lead, Brumley escaped but could not get another takedown and suffered the 6-5 loss.

The final match of the day was another close match, as No. 10 Ganbayar Sanjaa sneaked out a 6-5 decision over Joey Metzler. Sanjaa got the first takedown of the match but Metzler escaped and earned a takedown of his own before Sanjaa escaped before the end of the period.

Sanjaa escaped to begin the second period but Metzler did the same to start the third. Sanjaa was able to takedown Metzler, the ODU grappled escaped, but it was not enough, falling 6-5.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Dec. 29-30 at the Southern Scuffle and Midlands Invitational.
